Definitions, Associations, Relations
Overview
Your task is
a) to pick the right definition for a given target term
b) to describe a given target term with other terms. Think about how you would explain the meaning of a term to someone who does not know English very well.
Please, English Native Speakers Only!
Steps
Once you see the target, first pick the right definition.
Then, please associate a few other terms. Just listen to whatever comes to your mind. Then, enter these terms in the text box. Subsequently, specify the relation between the target and your associated term.
Rules & Tips
Use simple terms that you would expect to be understood by most people. Do not write entire phrases! Please avoid names. Please use lowercase. In case you are unsure about the relation, use "somehow associated".
If you don't know the target words, don't guess - rather do someone else's tasks.
Examples
The following inputs are acceptable:
Target: CHEESE; Term1: food, relation: CHEESE is a kind of FOOD; Term2: milk, relation: MILK is an important part of CHEESE
Target: NEW YORK; Term 1: big apple, relation: NEW YORK and BIG APPLE mean about the same thing; Term2: skyscraper, relation: SKYSCRAPER and NEW YORK are somehow associated.
The following inputs are not acceptable:
Target: CHEESE; Term1: my son. While your son might really like cheese, this does not help to define the concept
Target: NEW YORK; Term1: Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens. While these are all parts of New York, you should enter them one by one and not in the same text field.
Target: THE BEATLES; Term1: we all live in the yellow submarine. While this is a Beatles song line, this is a whole phrase and not a term.
Here are some valid examples for relations:
- WALLET and PURSE mean about the same thing
- HORSE is a kind of ANIMAL
- BRICK is an important part of WALL
- GREEN is a typical property of GRASS
- STUDY is what a STUDENT typically does
- CUTTING is what SCISSORS is typically used for
- BEACH and SURFING are somehow associated
