Using Computers to bring Eyes, Hands, and Models into the nanoWorld

Nanotechnology is a matter of scale to such a degree that it moves us away from our normal sensory modalities. We need an interface to translate from our modalities to these. This talk will describe the building of several such tools, in the context of multidisciplinary team at the UNC Nanoscale Science Research Group (NSRG). The goals of the computer scientists within the NSRG will be described first. Then four nanoscale manipulation systems in various stages of development will be presented, along with a brief description of science experiments done with each. A summary of our experience with the benefits and pitfalls of multidisciplinary science will close the lecture.
