Neural Symbolic Knowledge Technologies

There has been substantial interest and progress in intelligent systems and knowledge technologies in recent years based on new biomimetic processing principles for integrated knowledge-based systems. While in the past knowledge representation technologies have focused on powerful but complex inference systems, new generations of hybrid systems focus on the combination of symbolic reasoning with statistical or neural representations. While in the past robots were successful in traditional industrial environments, new generations of hybrid intelligent agents and robotic systems are being developed which focus on higher cognitive capabilities, including reasoning, learning and language communication.

In this talk we study the potential of nature-inspired, in particular hybrid neural and symbolic representations, in order to build new adaptive knowledge-based systems, learning ambient intelligence systems, multimodal neural agents, self organizing knowledge discovery systems and human robot interaction systems. We will give an overview of learning neural symbolic knowledge technologies and robots from a perspective of integrative hybrid intelligent systems. We illustrate some new developments including also examples under development in the new Knowledge Technology lab (http://www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/WTM/).
