Adapting Generation of Multimodal Referring Expressions to Properties of the Task Environment
Conventional accounts of the generation of referring expressions use static algorithms, and it is generally assumed that the `right' algorithm one day will be able to generate appropriate references in all contexts and environments. I argue that this is not the whole story, because such algorithms are not sensitive to the properties of the task environment. I will, firstly, describe a project on joint action between a human and a robot, which allows the robot to refer to an object by picking it up. Secondly, I will describe a new version of the Map Task in which the participants adapt their referring expressions to properties of the landmarks on the maps.
