Trusted Systems & Services: Should they be Dependable or Secure?

Trust generally pertains to the level of assurance we are willing to put in a system to deliver its stipulated services in the presence of disruptions. The aspect of dependability addresses continuity of the system in case the perturbations are either design or operational in nature; security tackles the cases of deliberate disruptions or breaches or attacks. A trusted system needs to be both dependable and secure! Neither is optional, and providing for concurrent dependability and security often results in interesting dichotomies.

Addressing large scale networked systems, the talk discussed the interplay and challenges dependability and security offer to result in actual and usable 'trusted' systems and services.
