Managing Artificial Intelligence: When Business needs Computer Science
Artificial intelligence marks the ever-evolving frontier of computational advancements that references human intelligence in addressing ever more complex decision-making problems. Presently, the uptake of AI in organizations is growing rapidly as is the advancement of AI as a technology itself. These jointed developments can be seen as signaling a shift in how management and computer science deal with one another. The role of managers in the burgeoning societal transformation involving AI cannot be overstated. At the same time, ongoing advances in computer science and software engineering of AI capabilities such as learning, agency, and inscrutability constantly refine and challenge conventional business wisdom around business strategies, human–AI interfaces, data, privacy, security, ethics, labor, human rights, and national security.
In this talk, I want to reflect on how the topic of managing AI allows us to reimagine both management and computer science, based on experiences formed in producing a special issue on “Managing AI” published in the September 2021 issue of MIS Quarterly. I will outline lessons learned, and sketch some emerging ideas for future research topics that in my view can only be solved through the true inter-disciplinary work between management and computer science scholars.
Jan Recker is Alexander-von-Humboldt Fellow, Nucleus Professor for Information Systems and Digital Innovation at the University of Hamburg funded by the Excellence Strategy, and Adjunct Professor at the QUT Business School, Australia.
Jan Recker is one of the University of Hamburg’s most cited scholars. He explores how organizations deal with digital transformations, how digital innovations enable new ventures, how developers analyze or design new digital technologies, and how digital solutions can contribute to sustainable development goals. Jan's research in these areas draws on quantitative, qualitative and computational methods. He has published in leading information systems, organization, management, software engineering, project management, computer science, and sociology journals. He has also written popular textbooks on scientific research and data analysis, which are in use in over 500 institutions in over 60 countries. He is presently Senior Editor for the MIS Quarterly.
