Taming the Machines - Securing KnowledgeProf. Dr. Irina Shklovski: Ethics and the Internet of Things

Connected systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) can be creepy, collecting data and potentially sharing it in ways that violate individual or collective privacy. But the reflection on ethical issues and problems usually only happens once the system is completed. On 24.04.2019 as part of our public lecture series “Taming the Machines”, Professor Irina Shklovski from ITU Copenhagen will report on the VirtEU project.

VirtEU has been focussing on communities of practice in London and Copenhagen that build IoT products and has been investigating how ethical practices unfold within this community. For example, ways were identified in how certain demands and values can be accommodated to the development of networked technologies. Prof. Shklovski will report on the insights gained and how they can inspire a more nuanced discussion of ethical impact.
