The status of prediction in research and social practices seems to be changing with the advent of big data and the rapid proliferation of advanced machine learning algorithms. In her lecture on January 20, 2025, Prof. Dr. Elena Esposito (University Bielefeld & University of Bologna) will explore the distinction between algorithmic and traditional probabilistic predictions, focusing on two key features of recent digital forecasts: their opacity and individual reference, which challenge explainability and generalizability.
