An article by Christian Schatzschneider, Gerd Bruder and Frank Steinicke was showcased as the primary story on the prestigious IEEE Xplore Innovation Spotlight, which highlights the most innovative and creative research directions at present. In the article, which was originally presented at IEEE VR 2016, the authors analyzed time perception in immersive virtual environments and introduced different methods to manipulate how long users feel that they spent in the virtual world.
The authors conducted an experiment, in which participants spend time on a virtual tropical island while the speed was increased or decreased at which the sun was moving over the horizon. The results indicated a strong effect of such manipulations on the subjective self-estimation of the duration. The article was the first to be able to document an effect on time perception in virtual reality and opened up a new direction for future research.
The showcased article can be found on the IEEE Xplore landing page (http://ieeexplore-spotlight.ieee.org/), or using this direct link (http://ieeexplore-spotlight.ieee.org/article/vr-time-perception/).
