Redirected Walking for VR Games
In this project we introduced a user interface for presence-enhancing gameplay with which players can explore the game environment in the most natural way, i.e., by real walking through an immersive virtual environment (IVE) wearing a head-mounted display (HMD). While the player walks through the virtual game environment, we apply redirected walking, which means that we guide her on a physical path which is different from the virtual path and fits into the physical workspace. Thus, players are able to walk through infinitely large virtual game environments, although the physical workspace is usually much smaller. Hence, players can experience the game immersively from the perspective of the player's virtual character, and their sense of presence is not broken by using a user interface that is not physically grounded such as a joystick. In this project we explore different approaches to enhance the immersive gameplay.
