The Jumper Metaphor
In this project we presented the Jumper metaphor for immersive virtual environments (IVEs) inspired by the science fiction movie Jumper by Doug Liman. In this locomotion technique we trigger "jumps", i.e., moments of very fast travel towards a previously indicated location, by analyzing quick accelerations in a head-tracked virtual reality (VR) setup. We have shown that such quasi-teleportation to previously seen targets can make exploration of virtual environments more efficient and comfortable, i.e., allowing users to cover very long distances in just a few seconds. Smooth transitions while jumping further helped to reduce usually observed disorientation during teleportation. In this project we compare effects on presence and spatial exploration with semi-natural locomotion techniques.
