Goal
Our goal was to find a simple, yet fun and modern approach to provide information that is usually given in an oldfashioned, analogue way. For example, students at Universität Hamburg have no easy way of finding out, where the lecturers they are searching for currently are, when they will return to their office or when their office hours are. To combine the idea of a central spot where lecturers can leave notes and a service app for students, we developed a solution that included augmented reality.
Technologies
The app we created works with Eddystone beacons that send a signal to a bluetooth capable device. The signal induces the device to read certain information from a database which then can be displayed. Since every beacon sends out a unique signal, the shown information belongs to one beacon only. This way we can use the same setup for different and highly individual content that is only displayed locally nearby the beacon. The information is shown in augmented reality. UniCorner uses Vuforia to make infotables visible whenever a UniCorner icon is caught by the camera. These icons are placed close to beacons, which also makes it easier for users to know where information is available.
Outlook
Right now UniCorner only works for lecturer’s offices in a certain small area. Lecturers or other owners of rooms can enter information to the database through a website. But the same setup could be used for different kinds of rooms like workspaces or meeting rooms to show timetables.
