The WISTS research group is pleased to announce the publication of the article “From Effort Reduction to Effort Management: An Expectancy Theory Perspective on Professionals’ Work Practices with Generative AI” in the renowned journal Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE).
The study explores how knowledge workers integrate Generative AI (GenAI) into their daily work practices and how GenAI influences their ways of working. While concerns are often raised that GenAI may lead to a reduction of effort, the results from 21 interviews with professionals provide a more nuanced picture: although users report reducing effort for certain task aspects, they also invest considerable energy to effectively steer GenAI and to improve collaboration with it. The authors therefore propose the concept of Effort Investment, which more accurately reflects the multifaceted dynamics and demands of working with a rapidly evolving technology such as GenAI.
The article was published as part of the Special Issue “Generating Tomorrow’s Me: How Collaborating with Generative AI Changes Humans” and is available open access.
