EXGAVINE: Exergames as Novel Form of Therapy in Virtual Reality for the Treatment of Neurological Diseases
We develop virtual reality exergames in cooperation with the Hochschule Düsseldorf, Gamelab.berlin, Retrobrain and Velamed for the treatment of neurological diseases with support from the senior home Hospital zum Heiligen Geist. Our main focus therein are patients of mild to moderate dementia. These exergames can be employed in addition to traditional forms of therapy and aren't in need of continuous doctor-patient contact. As opposed to current VR exergames, our development will address the cognitive and mental impairments of the players. We have planned to create three genres of serious games, which are targeting, racing and puzzle games, fittet specifically to our target audience. Following the dual-task paradigm, patients have to solve complex motoric-cognitive tasks. New werables and markerless optical tracking systems will help improve doctor supervision capabilities and therapeutic progress.
In cooperation with the living lab VITALab we promote social gaming in a comfortable environment which improves patient engagement and their physical and psychological well-being.
