We are pleased to have participated in this year's HICSS conference, where Marten Borchers presented two accepted publications on behalf of the co-authors Lucas Memmert, Julian Plückhahn, Enrico Milutzki, and Eva Bittner.
The publication Designing ML-based Prediction Systems for the Energy Consumption of Electric Buses to Support Public Transport Providers examines how machine learning models that predict energy consumption can be used to support and optimize the operation of electrically powered buses. Especially in the context of the European Green Deal, which stipulates a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030, this is an important building block, as almost all public transport companies want to convert their fleets to e-buses and complete this by 2030. Our results show that a reliable prediction of energy consumption for routes to be traveled is possible and also specifies meta-requirements and design principles. Special thanks go to Johanna Ahrens, Felix Schmidt, and Jan Krause, who supported and enabled the project and its publication on the part of Hamburger Hochbahn AG.
The publication Solving Coding Challenges Jointly with a Large Language Model: Understanding Student Journeys Through Bloom's Taxonomy, on the other hand, examines how students use a large language model for the development of prototypes and learn in the process. The study was conducted over two semesters, and the LLM interactions were evaluated and analyzed according to Bloom's (revised) taxonomy to determine cognitive processes and knowledge types. The study sheds light on how students learn through and about the use of LLM in programming projects and provides important insights that should be considered by both teachers and students.
