FID Romance Studies
Since 2016, the FID Romance Studies has been jointly operated by the University and State Library
(ULB) Bonn and the State and University Library (SUB) Hamburg and has now developed a wide range of services that have a firm place in the infrastructure landscape of Romance studies. Its main task is to provide Romance studies research in Germany with a comprehensive and sustainable supply of specialized research literature, i.e. digital information resources and physical media that go beyond the basic stock usually available at universities. The processes and infrastructures of the Specialized Information Service (search portal, website with a comprehensive range of information) for the supra-regional supply of specialized literature and the production of high-quality bibliographic metadata are now firmly established, but nevertheless require continuous maintenance, content expansion and adaptation to new requirements. Continuous maintenance is also required by the communication structures and networks in which the FID operates, with regard to the specialist community, relevant (interdisciplinary) infrastructures, the FID network and international cooperation.
In addition to these traditional core areas, this application focuses increasingly on the digital support of research projects at various points in the research cycle in order to exploit the associated opportunities for services in Romance studies. In doing so, the FID will benefit from the expertise available locally in Bonn and Hamburg as well as from the experience available in the FID network and in other cooperative information infrastructures such as the NFDI or the library networks. Specific fields of action include digital open access publishing and research data management as well as the use of AI-supported methods.
As large university libraries from the U15 with university and state library responsibilities, the applicant libraries not only contribute their outstanding subject collections, their collection-related infrastructures and experience to the FID, but also their networking in the library landscape and information infrastructure as well as their own extensive and complementary expertise in various areas in innovative fields such as digitization, the development of open source software, open access publishing, research data management and digital humanities.
The Language Technology Group (LT) and the Hub of Computing and Data Science (HCDS) at Universität Hamburg are partnes in this application, contributing outstanding expertise in the interdisciplinary research and use of innovative digital methods on text and the provision of research-supporting services.
In the cooperation with the FID Romance Studies, the aim is to provide the Romance studies community with a low-barrier introduction to the use of digital future technologies as a support for research. In addition to the (further) development of research-related services, LT/HCDS supports the exchange of information in the field of artificial intelligence and information retrieval for research-relevant data and thus also meets the need for skills transfer in this interdisciplinary field.
