Doctoral Thesis Defense of Huajian Fang
14 July 2025
Our colleague Huajian Fang completed his PhD at the University of Hamburg, under the supervision of Prof. Timo Gerkmann and Prof. Stefan Wermter. His PhD research mainly focuses on advancing speech enhancement through the integration of statistical signal processing and machine learning. On 02.06.2025, he had the successful defense of his doctoral thesis "Model-Based Deep Speech Enhancement for Improved Interpretability and Robustness".
Here is a brief information about his thesis: Noise interference may reduce communication fluency among participants during teleconferencing and negatively affect the speech recognition and understanding modules of a voice-controlled machine. While deep learning-based methods have advanced the field significantly, gaining robustness and interpretability remains challenging. This thesis investigates these challenges by incorporating statistical modeling into deep learning-based speech enhancement frameworks.
Here are some highlight publications that arose during his doctorate:
Partially Adaptive Multichannel Joint Reduction of Ego-Noise and Environmental Noise
Integrating Uncertainty into Neural Network-based Speech Enhancement
We congratulate him for his graduation and wishing the best for his future career!
