Introduction
"Where Is Mommy" is a VR game that our team developed during the Global Game Jam 2019. In this game, the player steps into the role of a little boy wo has lost his mother and has to navigate through a virtual supermarket to find her. The character is controlled by head movements only.
We developed this game for the HTC Vive system (only head-mounted display required).
Story of the game
We created the story of the game as an interpretation of the game jam's overall theme "Home": for a small child, home is where the mother is, as she gives protection and care. Therefore losing the mother is one of the most discomforting events at that age, especially in a place as foreign and confusing as a supermarket.
We are introducing this story in an animated start sequence where the player sees a little boy who weeps, shouts for his mother and then starts to run in order to find her.

Gameplay
After the start sequence, the player takes the first-person perspective of the little boy and finds him- or herself running through a labyrinth of supermarket shelves. The running speed is paced by the game itself and the player can control if the character is running in the left, middle, or right lane of the game by tilting his or her head for a lane switch. If the player is in the left lane when an aisle opens on the left side, the character will automatically turn around the corner; the same applies to the right lane.
Using those control mechanisms, the player has to navigate through the supermarket aisles to find his mother, who is placed at a fixed position in the game level. He or she has 90 seconds to do so, with the respective countdown timer being displayed on top of the player's field of vision.
The game setting at the start of the game
Additionally, the player needs to avoid crashing into supermarket shelves or being hit by the shopping carts moving freely through the labyrinth. With each hit, the boy's motivation level drops. This is indicated by a matching face icon right of the timer.

End of Game
If the litte boy does not reach his mother within 90 seconds, or if his motivation level drops from the initial level 3 to 0, the player loses the game.
However, if the player succeeds in finding the mother, he or she will see the game's end scene where the mother kneels down to take the boy into her arms.
