Memory Deduplication Side-Channel Attacks to Detect Applications in Co-Resident Virtual Machines and Defence Mechanisms

Abstract:

Memory deduplication can save memory by mapping multiple identical virtual memory pages to a single physical page. However, this opens a side-channel, as modifications to deduplicated pages incur a measurable delay. This thesis analyses how this side-channel can be exploited to detect the presence of specific versions of applications across the boundaries of virtual machines. Furthermore, it presents approaches for defending against such attacks while preserving the ability of memory deduplication to save memory.
