Applied Declarative Security & Privacy Mechanisms in macOS Applications

Abstract:

Declarative Security & Privacy (DSnP) decouples the configuration and implementation of SnP mechanisms from the business logic of the application. DSnP enables developers to create secure and privacy-friendly applications. This dissertation examines how DSnP is adopted, identifies and addresses obstacles, and improves validation. With macOS as a case-study, selected DSnP mechanisms are analyzed empirically: sandboxing, TLS parameters, runtime permissions, and misuse of cryptographic APIs.
