The course program divides into the following categories:

Mandatory modules: These modules cover knowledge specific to the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence program, and students have no choice regarding the required modules.

Required elective modules: These are related to Data Science and Artificial Intelligence core concepts and applications. Students have to choose modules from the category “Fundamentals of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence” for a total of 24 ECTS, and modules from the  category “Advanced Topics in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence” for a total of 18 ECTS.

Domain Knowledge:
These modules cover various application domains and transversal knowledge concepts, enabling the students to apply the core concepts learnt in the required and free modules to diverse scientific disciplines. Courses from at least two, at most four, application domains with at least 6 ECTS per domain must be selected, and students must gain in total 24 ECTS. Students can choose to study either in depth (select many courses from a few application domains) or in breadth (many application domains, with a typical 6 ECTS per module).
Please refer to the full table-style module handbook for module pre-requirements and more details.

For a detailed list of all modules available in each category, see Curriculum Details.

Is the DSAI program open to international students?

The DSAI program is taught completely in English and is open to international students. The application procedure for all students is identical, regardless of their nationality, residency, or the country in which they received their Bachelor's degree. Please note: Some international Master's programs at the University of Hamburg follow a different application cycle. This does not currently apply to DSAI, which follows the standard application cycle with application period between February 15th and March 31st.

Are there any tuition fees?

The University of Hamburg does not currently levy tuition fees. However, each student must pay a semester contribution towards student organizations and services, and for the public transport ticket. More information is available here.

What are the chances of admission?

In the previous application period we received around 1700 applications. Currently the program admits about 20 students every year. We expect a similar number of applications in the coming application period.

Do you offer scholarships or other funding options?

We do not currently offer any program-specific scholarships. General information on funding options in the University of Hamburg can be found here.

Who can I contact for more information?

• For questions on the application process, required documents and regarding the program structure, please contact the DSAI Team: dsai-info.inf@uni-hamburg.de. Before contacting us, please make sure you have properly read through the information provided on our web pages, including this FAQ. Due to the large volume of incoming inquiries, it might take us a few days to answer.
• For technical problems with the application portal (STiNE), please contact the Campus Center using their contact form.

When can I apply to the DSAI program?

The application period starts on February 15th and ends on March 31st of each year. We only offer a single application period each year, with admission to the winter semester (beginning in October).

Do I require an APS certificate for the application?

No.

Should I use uni-assist for the application?

No. Applications for the DSAI program can only be submitted through the University of Hamburg’s STiNE portal.

Is there an application fee?

No.

When can I expect the notification regarding admission or rejection?

Notifications will be sent around mid-May.

How can I prevent my application from being rejected?

Besides fulfilling the minimum requirements (and providing the relevant evidence), please take note of these important points:

• Only applications fully submitted before the deadline will be considered.
• All required documents must be uploaded using the STiNE application portal. Documents sent by E-Mail or by Post will not be considered. Missing documents may lead to rejection of your application.
• All documents must be in English or in German. If your original documents are in a different language, please provide the original along with a certified translation to either English or German.
• Scanned documents must be in a high enough quality to be readable. Low-quality scans may lead to rejection if the selection committee can not properly read their contents.
• Scans and other PDF files should be uploaded in the correct orientation.
• Please refrain from submitting any documents not listed under Required Documents. This specifically includes motivational letters, irrelevant certificates, awards and irrelevant recommendation letters.

All information included in the application should be clear and easily accessible. The selection committe must review hundreds of applications in a short time and will not go out of its way to decipher obscure applications.

Where can I find my application number?

After registering in the STiNE application portal and starting the online application, select "Application -> Online Application" from the main menu, then click "Edit" next to your ongoing application. This will lead you to the application summary, where will you find the application number down the page.

What are ECTS credits? How can I convert my credits to ECTS?

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a standardized systems for comparing academic workload across countries, used mainly in Europe. In Germany, a standard academic year consists of 60 ECTS credits (or 30 ECTS credits per semester). If your country or your university has an official conversion ratio between local credits and ECTS, please use it. Otherwise you may convert your local credits to ECTS based on the total number of local credits and the duration of your study program.

If the conversion to ECTS results in a non-integer number of ECTS credits, we allow rounding up to the next integer for each course separately (for example, if after converting a course has 5.4 ECTS credits, you may count it as having 6 ECTS credits in the application).

I do not fulfill the minimum requirements regarding coursework in Mathematics or Computer Science. Can professional experience or online courses count towards these requirements instead?

No. Only courses taken and passed in a university can count towards the coursework requirements. You can, however, include courses that were not taken as part of your Bachelor’s degree (examples: a second Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree you have already started).

I do not fulfill the minimum requirements regarding coursework in Mathematics or Computer Science. Can I compensate by taking extra courses at the University of Hamburg after being admitted?

No, this option is not offered. Failure to fulfill the minimum requirements will result in direct rejection of your application, therefore making admission impossible.

What courses count towards the “Stochastics” requirement?

Courses covering subjects such as: Probability, Statistics, Statistical Methods, Random Processes, Bayesian Methods, Bayesian Estimation and similar.

What courses count towards the “Computer Science” requirement?

In general we accept courses with subjects similar to those offered in the "required" and "required elective" (Pflicht/Wahlpflicht)  sections of the B.Sc. Informatik (Computer Science) degree at the University of Hamburg (see regulations in German).

These subjects include:

• Software development / Programming
