We ask our doctoral students to communicate with us via a Uni Hamburg email address (e.g. uni.hamburg.de, studium.uni-hamburg.de). You can change your correspondence email address after logging in to Docata-MIN; please follow the instructions here.

We recommend all our doctoral students to familiarize with the Doctoral Degree Regulations MIN Faculty (2018) and to set up an Individual Development Plan.
Admission to doctoral studies
Please beware that you must apply for admission at the BEGINNING of your doctoral procedure, before you start researching.
The following application documents must be prepared in electronic form and submitted via Docata-MIN:
- Application form (to be generated in Docata-MIN)
- Completed and fully signed supervision agreement: Please use this form only.
- Completed and fully signed research project outline: Please use this form only.
- Copies of your degree certificates (e.g. bachelor’s and master’s degree): certificate of academic degree, transcript of records, diploma supplement. Please submit certified translations in case the original language is not German or English.
- Copy of certificate of higher education entrance eligibility (secondary school leaving certificate: dt. Abitur)
- Copy of identification document (e.g. ID card, passport, visa)
- Curriculum vitae and if available, publication list
- If applicable: Statement attesting that you have previously applied for a doctorate at another higher education institution, in another faculty of Universität Hamburg or in another department of the MIN Faculty of Universität Hamburg (including details on the application).
The online application is done through Docata-MIN. Please read carefully our FAQ, section Admissions for guidelines on registration to Docata, preparation of the application as well as further information regarding your admission.
Opening of the doctorate proceedings
When submitting your dissertation, you apply for the opening of the doctoral proceedings. Your dissertation must be submitted electronically via Docata-MIN. In addition the Studienbüro requires 1 printed copy of your dissertation (including the electronic version on a CD or USB-stick) for its archives.
The following application documents must be prepared in electronic form and submitted via Docata-MIN:
- Application form (to be generated in Docata-MIN)
- Current enrollment certificate (= semester certificate)
- If not already submitted during the application process for admission: Copy of identification document (e.g. ID card, passport, visa)
- If applicable: Proof of the name change (e.g. marriage certificate) after your admission to the doctorate
- If applicable: Proof of interruptions of your doctorate
The online application is done through Docata-MIN. Please read carefully our FAQ, section 5 Submission, as well as Sections 6, 7 and 8 for guidelines to the application process and further information about the opening of doctorate proceedings!
Note: Please contact the academic office if your admission to the doctoral procedures took place under the Doctoral Degree Regulations MIN Faculty (2010) or the Promotionsordnung des Fachbereichs Informatik (1998). You may switch to the new Doctoral Degree Regulations MIN Faculty (2018) when submitting your dissertation, view also Transitional regulations (PDF).
Informatics subject doctoral committee
The upcoming meeting dates of the subject doctoral committee are published in the right hand column. The meetings are not open to the public.
Amongst others, the subject doctoral committee decides in its meetings about the appointment of assessors and the opening of doctorate proceedings. If possible, please submit your requests no later than ten days prior to the relevant committee meeting.
