"Taming the Machines" public lecture series will kick off this winter semester on October 22, 2025 with the lecture "How can Europe achieve digital sovereignty?" by Prof. Dr. José van Dijck (Utrecht University). The growing dominance of two global platform ecosystems has left European countries to rely on American and Chinese digital infrastructures—affecting markets, labor, social practices, and democracies. While Europe focuses on regulation, emerging technologies like generative AI and geopolitical changes make the infrastructural perspective more poignant. This lecture addresses two questions: What public values are fundamental to Europe’s platform societies, and what responsibilities do companies, governments, and citizens have in building alternative, sustainable platform ecosystem based on those values?
