SeaSchool Workshop at Europaschule Aldegrever-Gymnasium in Soest

SeaSchool workshop engages over 100 highschool students on June 14–15, 2023
The SeaSchool initiative, a collaboration between the SWK department and HITeC e.V., is dedicated to showcasing to high school students (Schüler:innen) that computer science and IT professions encompass more than just theory and programming, with a focus on fostering social interaction. Particularly in the domains of Software Engineering and Software Architecture, effective communication and creativity are essential in understanding customer problems, jointly analyzing them, and ultimately developing solutions. At the heart of this initiative is a workshop involving all students of a specific high school grade (typically 9th or 10th grade). During this workshop, high-school students engage in real-world problem-solving, often derived from the school environment. They go through typical activities such as "Setting Goals & Gathering Requirements," "Analyzing the Domain," "Designing Architecture and User Interfaces," and "Analyzing Quality." The students then present their results to each other. SeaSchool aims to inspire high-school students, especially those who may not have previously considered a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) focus due to preconceived notions about the profession, particularly encouraging females.
For the third time, we conducted a two-day SeaSchool workshop, this time at Europaschule Aldegrever-Gymnasium in Soest. Over 100 9th-grade high school students participated in 12 teams, working on planning a software system for the school kiosk's order processing. Once again, the workshop was characterized by the enthusiastic participation of high school students who developed highly creative and effective solutions.
