Topic
Grappling with reality: Shaping service systems in real-world environments
Language: english
Abstract
Our group pursues research through the lens of service systems, i.e. socio-technical systems for value co-creation (Böhmann et al. 2014). Value co-creation emphasizes an interactive process of multiple actors creating mutual benefits. This lens changes how we perceive of information technology: users, use, and utility of technology (Brenner et al. 2014) take a center stage. Particularly the interest in use and utility drives us towards researching in real-world environments.
I will give two examples of research projects in different environments where we apply this focus: identifying privacy limitations in service ecosystems (Kurtz et al. 2020) and supporting urban neighborhoods with online neighborhood social networks (Vogel et al. 2020, Vogel et al. 2021).
Based on the last example, I will talk about theoretical insights learned through reflecting these projects in real environments on a conceptual level. This leads to a multi-level framework of service system design that connects user-centric design issues to the design of institutions (Grotherr et al. 2018).
