IAS alumnus and colleague at the Department of Informatics receives GI Prize

We congratulate Angelie Kraft, a graduate of the Intelligent Adaptive Systems master's program, who has been awarded the special prize for an outstanding master's thesis of high societal relevance by the Women and Computer Science special interest group of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) e.V..

Der alle zwei Jahre verliehene Preis soll die Sichtbarkeit von Absolventinnen und ihren Leistungen erhöhen. Der Preis ist mit 500€ dotiert und beinhaltet eine einjährige Mitgliedschaft in der Fachgruppe. Die Preisverleihung fand am 22. April 2023 in Berlin statt. Die Urkunde wurde im Rahmen der Jahrestagung der Fachgruppe von Prof. Ulrike Lucke, Vizepräsidentin der GI, überreicht. Eine Veröffentlichung im Magazin der Fachgruppe wird folgen

Ihre Abschlussarbeit “Triggering Models: Measuring and Mitigating Bias in German Language Generation”  wurde im Sommer 2021 unter der Betreuung von Prof. Dr. Chris Biemann und Hans-Peter Zorn (Head of AI bei der inovex GmbH) verfasst. Sie untersucht darin Geschlechterstereotype und -vorurteile in deutschsprachigen Texten, die mit den Sprachmodellen GPT-2 und GPT-3 generiert werden. Derartige Sprachmodelle werden immer häufiger in der Praxis eingesetzt und von einer breiter werdenden Masse verwendet.Reproduzieren diese Modelle soziale Vorurteile, kann sich das negativ auf unsere Gesellschaft auswirken. Bei der EXPO 2021 erzielte Frau Kraft mit einer Posterpräsentation zu ihrem Abschlussprojekt bereits den ersten Platz .

Angelie Kraft ist mittlerweile wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der Arbeitsgruppe Semantic Systems, wo sie zum Thema Faktentreue und Fairness in großen Sprachmodellen forscht. Ihre Promotion wird betreut durch Prof. Dr. Ricardo Usbeck und Prof. Dr. Judith Simon.

The prize, which is awarded every two years, is intended to increase the visibility of female graduates and their achievements. The prize is endowed with 500€ and includes a one-year membership in the special interest group. The award ceremony took place on April 22, 2023 in Berlin. The certificate was presented by Prof. Ulrike Lucke, Vice President of the GI, during the annual meeting of the group. A publication in the magazine of the group will follow.

Her final thesis “Triggering Models: Measuring and Mitigating Bias in German Language Generation” was written in summer 2021 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Chris Biemann and Hans-Peter Zorn (Head of AI at inovex GmbH). In it, she investigates gender stereotypes and biases in German-language texts generated with the GPT-2 and GPT-3 language models. Such language models are increasingly used in practice and by a broadening mass of users. If these models reproduce social prejudices, it can have a negative impact on our society. Ms. Kraft was already awarded the first prize at EXPO 2021 with a poster presentation on her final project. The thesis can be read here.

Angelie Kraft is now a research associate in the Semantic Systems group, where she is conducting research on factuality and fairness in large-scale language models and contributes to the DFG-funded NFDI4DataScience project. Her doctoral studies are supervised by Prof. Dr. Ricardo Usbeck and Prof. Dr. Judith Simon.
