The Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) DAS! reported in their recent feature about the research activities of the Human-Computer Interaction group. In the show which was broadcast on November 30, 2023, the NDR team shows how human intelligence from real health experts can be combined with artificial intelligence (AI) with an example about the HIVAM project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In the HIVAM project, which stands for “Hybrid Intelligent Virtual Avatar/Assistant Models to Support (Tele)medical Advice and Treatment”, patients can interact multimodally with real health experts without physical contact via their virtual avatar or intelligent virtual agents and maintain the feeling of spatial and social presence as well as co-presence. This enables contactless collection and transmission of health data as well as diagnostics, monitoring and therapy. In addition to supplementary treatment via a telemedicine platform, an AI-based assistance system for decision support is created, which also improves health and nursing care, addresses the consequences of social isolation and psychological stress and can optimize on-site advice, visits and treatment.
