ConcEv – Conceptualizing Events – Konzeptualisierungsprozesse in der Sprachproduktion
Project in the DFG Priority Program Language Production
The topic of this project are conceptualization processes in language production. Starting from non-linear representations of the content to be described these processes generate linear (propositional) representations, the "preverbal message" which serve as input for a module for semantic and syntactic formulation. The primary topics are (1) the interaction of miscellaneous conceptualization processes, like segmentation, structuring, selection and linearization, and (2) the structure of representations, which are built up during the process of conceptualization. The investigations are carried out in the domain of the production of event descriptions. The temporal structure of events and sequences of events can be used experimentally as guideline for linearization, without being confined to a unique sequence of events. Additionally, descriptions of events serve especially well for investigating processes of segmentation, structuring, and selection in the conceptualization, because the individuation of events is especially determined by conceptual factors. The project is obliged to an interdisciplinary approach. On the basis of empirical investigations computerlinguistic models are developed for selected conceptualization processes, in which results of psycholinguistic research about the course of processes are combined with theoretical-linguistic considerations about linguistic structures.
