Setting Up and Using Printers
Printers can be set up and used with the supported operating systems using the respective common methods. Below, you will find a brief description; more detailed instructions are available with additional assistance.
The print server is only accessible from the department's data network. If you are using a mobile device with WLAN, you must also establish a VPN connection to the department network.
Linux (using Ubuntu as an example):
1. Select the printer icon in the system settings.
2. Choose "Add."
3. Under "Network Printer" / "Find Network Printer," enter `linuxprint.informatik.uni-hamburg.de` as the host and click "Search."
4. Select a printer from the list.
5. The official printer name and location will not be automatically adopted. In the following dialog, you can enter a custom name or the official name for the printer.
Windows:
1. Open a Windows Explorer window, e.g., "My Computer" or "Documents."
2. You may need to activate the address bar via the "View" menu.
3. Type `\\linuxprint` in the address bar and press Enter.
4. Install one of the printers from the list by double-clicking on the name.
Mac OS X:
When you open the print menu in an application with ⌘P, you can either select an already configured printer or, under the "Nearby Printers" menu, select a new printer. This will then be set up automatically.
