Informatics VPN Server
Using the Informatics VPN server is, especially for users of Windows, the easiest way of accessing your private data in the the Department of Informatics network (home directory) and also the printers located on the Stellingen campus. You can access Informatics ressources from your private devices using the common features of your operating systen, i.e. "map network drive", or "add printer".
Connecting to the Informatics VPN is enabled by a Microsoft TMG Server. This system allows for a granular control of access rights on the basis of user groups and individual informatics accounts. The VPN server uses by default your Informatics account to access services in the Department of Informatics. During a VPN session you will automatically be provided with an IP address from the university network range, which allows you to access university wide licensed software, i.e. virus scanner, library resources, etc.
On the VPN server's side a "Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)" and the "Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) with preshared key" is supported.
The Microsoft-proprietary "Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP)" is also available. The iRZ recommends they usage of SSTP connections for Windows clients. This enables an increased level of security as well as unobstructed access from every location because only default HTTP/HTTPS ports are used. However, it is necessary to store the (self signed) certificate of the Informatik VPN server fbivpn.informatik.uni-hamburg.de
in your computer-certificate store under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities":
Informatics VPN server certificate
Note: new certificate on 12.01.2025 (valid until 12.01.2027)
Instructions for how to add the vpn-server certificate to Windows.
The VPN server's address is:
